8 minute Intermezzo - originally commissioned by cellist, Steven Isserlis.
"A primitive, ethnic-influenced piece, with charm - a Sonata, or cyclic form - a sense of starting out - voyaging - returning."
The work was first commissioned by Steven Isserlis with original funds from the National Federation of Music Societies and first performed by Steven Isselis at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London in 1981.
The Awakening, inspired by Solomon Island pan-pipes recorded in 1978, develops and extended song for cello, or violar, suppoarted by a gentle, yet rhythmical piano accompaniment. The linking cadenza ' Oceania', reminds of frigate birds soaring in the heavesn against a deep blue Pacific sky. The work is closely linked with moceanic experiences and travels and is featured on the TV documentary about my travels in the Pacific - Musical Mariner (See DVD).
CD recording also available featuring David Fanshawe and Steven Isserlis.
