FOREWARD by Brian Kay

?The man who wrote the African Sanctus? - that?s how so many people all over the world think of David, and there must be lots of composers who dream of a global success on that scale! But that was back in the 1970s, and an awful lot of water has flowed under his innumerable bridges since then, in a life that never seems to stand still for a minute. His achievements are monumental, including the astonishingly comprehensive archive of traditional music of the Pacific region that he built up on his extensive travels. In doing that, his gift to the world is every bit as great and important as that pioneering work carried out by the likes of Cecil Sharpe and Vaughan Williams in rescuing the folk songs and dances of the UK from potential obscurity a century ago.

This CD collection of David?s deliciously melodious and ear-catching music gives some idea of the sheer breadth of his output, from nearly a dozen TV and film scores to his most recent set of Sea Images, including a touching memorial to those who suffered from the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami and a wonderfully tub-thumping celebration of Nelson?s victory at Trafalgar. For anyone who loves a good tune - and the recent explosion of revived interest in top quality Light Music shows that there are many such, including me! - David?s music is simply irresistible, as this selection makes clear. Taken together it paints a vibrant picture of a life - as he says himself in his own fascinating sleeve notes - ?full of contrasts and surprises?. What surprises most, perhaps, is how long it?s taken for this CD to appear. It?s called The Best of David Fanshawe, but knowing how unstoppable David is, the best is probably yet to come!
